What are the benefits of using coconut products?

Most people associate coconuts with island holidays and tropical cocktails. It is all that and much more. Coconuts are used for its water, milk, oil, and meat in pantry items, skin, hair and body care, health products, pet care, cleaning products, and homewares.

Some benefits include:

  • Coconut is versatile and can be used when cooking and baking sweet and savory food.
  • It is a great choice for people who are paleo, gluten free, low carb, and keto diets.
  • Coconuts are high in manganese which is essential for bone health and the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and cholesterol.
  • They’re also rich in copper and iron, which help form red blood cells, as well as selenium, an important antioxidant that protects your cells.
  • Coconut oil is used in many natural face products as it’s naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and moisturizing.
  • Coconut oil is composed primarily of nourishing fatty acids and is especially high in lauric acid. It also contains vitamin E and healthy fats, which help to make skin smooth.
  • Coconut oil is also known for its anti-aging properties. It has anti-oxidants such as Vitamin E and Vitamin A, which help to slow down the aging process and may help to reduce the damage from free radicals and the sun.
  • Coconut oil can penetrate inside the hair shaft better than other oils because of its fatty acid structure and low molecular weight. Regular use of coconut oil on the hair nourishes  dry strands and also strengthens and protects it.

What is MCT?

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) are types of fatty acids containing 6-12 carbons. They include caproic acid (C6), caprylic acid (C8), Capric acid (C10) and Lauric acid (C12).  They are found in foods like coconut oil and they are metabolized differently than the long-chain triglycerides (LCT) found in most other foods. Because of the shorter chain length, MCTs are rapidly broken down and absorbed into the body. Unlike LCTs, MCTs go straight to the liver. There they can be used as an instant energy source or turned into ketones. Ketones can cross from the blood to the brain providing energy. Because the calories contained in MCTs are more efficiently turned into energy and used by the body, they are less likely to be stored as fat.
